Child Jesus in painted and gilt wood, XIII th century

The sitting position of the Christ, whose right hand was certainly in a position of blessing, shows that the statuette comes from a group of the Virgin and Child, and probably a Sedens Sapientiae, a seated Virgin known as "throne of wisdom".

If the Virgin Throne of Wisdom is often seen in the twelfth century or the first half of the thirteenth, the smiling face of our Child places this work in the second half of the thirteenth century, and recalls the French school, but also the German school, especially the Cologne workshops.

Important remains of polychromy. Numerous lacks visible. The gilding that adorned the hair is almost gone. The work is nevertheless moving and charming. Mounted on a wooden base.

Width : 11,5 cm
