Geminate Capitals in Languedoc Marble, 15th Century

Geminate capitals, carved in a superb block of red marble from Languedoc, also called Caunes marble.

This marble, extracted around Caunes-Minervois, was exploited during Antiquity and the Middle Ages for the manufacture of columns and capitals. It experienced a revival of interest in the classical period, thus serving to decorate the marble Trianon at Versailles and the Invalides.

Decorated with of water leaves for one and oak leaves and acorns extending under the cornice between the two capitals for the other.

Most probably grom a disappeared cloister. Languedoc region
