Romano-Gothic capital circa 1150-1160
Please click to enlarge picture
Applique capital in limestone with a round basket decorated with a decoration of acanthus leaves and three-quarter heads emerging from the plant decoration, those of a man and a woman . This capital marks the passage from the Romanesque, of which it retains the attraction for Roman antiquity and the taste for figuration, to the Gothic of which it already presents the essential structure, the very marked hooks and the round basket. This architectural element can be compared to the capitals of the choir of the abbey church of Saint-Denis, or of Saint-Germain des Prés in Paris.
Probably Ile de France around 1150-1160
