Carved with a bearded and horned old man's head, opposed to a young man's head.
"Janus is the Roman god of beginnings and endings, of choices, passage and doors. He is bifrone (two-headed) and depicted with one face facing the past, the other facing the future."
From the 16th century, janiform heads are associated with an esoteric tradition.

Representative of Italian Romanesque art, this head shows extensive use of the trephine.

Visible accidents and losses.
Mounted on a fine 18th century marble pedestal, damaged at the base.

H.: 11 cm - H.: 18.5 cm with base.
